Valar Atomics Completes $1 Billion Equity Financing, Sequoia Capital Partner Joins Board
Nuclear energy startup Valar Atomics confirmed on August 3 that it has completed a $1 billion equity financing round led by Sequoia Capital. Company founder and CEO Isaiah Taylor stated that Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire has joined the company's board of directors. In addition to the equity financing, Valar Atomics also secured a $200 million credit facility from Erebor and other banks.

Valar Atomics did not disclose its post-financing valuation. Reports indicate the company is valued at approximately $6 billion.
Valar Atomics primarily develops small modular reactors (SMRs). These reactors typically follow a smaller-scale, factory-prefabricated design approach, aiming to offer greater flexibility in construction costs and timelines compared to traditional large-scale reactors. The company stated that in June, its Ward 250 reactor powered Nvidia's Blackwell system, and announced a partnership with Nvidia to jointly develop a 30-megawatt waterless artificial intelligence facility.
The company stated that its reactor projects can generate engineering, manufacturing, and operational data needed for next-generation reactor improvements, thereby accelerating R&D iteration for subsequent models. Valar Atomics noted that the NOVA reactor core took two years to build, while the Ward 250 reactor took approximately seven months from construction to reaching criticality. The company said that as more reactors are built, its construction timelines are expected to continue shortening, gradually enabling the company to achieve the capacity to produce dozens, hundreds, or even more reactors annually. This financing round will be used to advance the next phase of goals, namely the manufacturing of small modular reactor units.
Recently, financing activity among nuclear energy startups has remained robust. Antares recently raised $470 million, while X-energy raised $1 billion through its initial public offering.
Other investors participating in Valar Atomics' financing round include Apandion Capital, Atreides Management, Conviction, Dream Ventures, HOF Capital, Point72, Riot Ventures, Snowpoint Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners.
