New Chair Takes Office for ASME BPV III China International Working Group
On August 4, the 2026 First Working Meeting and the Fourth Chairmanship Election Conference of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III (BPV III) China International Working Group (hereinafter referred to as the “Working Group”) were held at Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI). Following a vote by attending committee members, Jiao Ming, Deputy General Manager of the company, was unanimously elected as the new Chair of the Working Group, while Zhou Zhou, Director of the Nuclear Equipment Safety and Reliability Center at China Productivity Center for Machinery, and Jiang Cailin, Vice President of Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group, were elected as Vice Chairs.

Jiao Ming stated that the Working Group will continue to establish regular communication channels between the domestic industry and ASME, leverage key domestic nuclear power projects, and lead the industry in tackling cutting-edge technologies such as radiography testing of ultra-thick forgings, phased array ultrasonic testing, and additive manufacturing of nuclear equipment. The Group will work together with industry partners to promote equipment technology upgrades, facilitate bidirectional standards interoperability and transformation, and continuously enhance China's nuclear power voice, influence, and core competitiveness in the field of international nuclear power standards development, thereby laying a solid foundation for the independent, large-scale, and high-quality development of China's nuclear power industry.
At the meeting, John Hasselmann, Director of International Affairs at ASME, presented honorary certificates to Wang Yong, former Chair of the Third Working Group and Level II Consultant of the company, highly commending the outstanding achievements of the Working Group during his tenure and expressing appreciation for Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute's efforts in jointly promoting the localized application of ASME nuclear power codes across the industry.
The conference focused on cutting-edge and hot topics in code application for domestic and international nuclear power engineering construction, bringing together expert strength from across the industry. Nearly 50 key technical topics were discussed in depth, including fracture toughness evaluation boundaries for vessel nozzles and acceptance criteria for weld joint defects, with broad consensus reached.

The ASME BPV III China International Working Group was jointly initiated by the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) and ASME in 2011, aiming to unite the entire domestic industrial chain in deepening engagement in the field of international nuclear power standards. Over the past decade or more, the Working Group has discussed more than 500 common industry technical challenges, submitted over 180 professional technical consultation documents to ASME international committees, and cultivated more than 50 high-end standards experts proficient in international codes for the domestic nuclear power industry. It has now become an authoritative cross-industry platform for standards exchange, technical research, and international collaboration in China's nuclear power sector, and serves as one of the key vehicles for China's nuclear power to participate in global standards development.
