Three Los Angeles Companies Race in Portable Nuclear Power Sector

Southern California is emerging as a key testing ground for portable nuclear power technology. Three companies from the Los Angeles area—Valar Atomics in El Segundo, Antares Nuclear in Torrance, and Radiant Industries, also based in El Segundo—have joined federally backed pilot projects for portable nuclear power plants. These small-scale nuclear generating units are designed for rapid transport, deployment, and activation, with target scenarios including remote disaster zones, military bases, off-grid facilities, and even future deep-space missions.

The reactors from Valar Atomics and Antares Nuclear achieved self-sustaining nuclear reactions before the July 4 government deadline, demonstrating their potential for rapid deployment. Related tests were conducted at Idaho National Laboratory. Radiant Industries' "Kaleidos" unit is expected to reach criticality later this year. Antares CEO Jordan Bramble stated on social media that the ultimate goal of the reactors is to sell electricity to customers, indicating that these companies are not merely showcasing research achievements but are actively advancing commercial applications.

A core selling point of these micro-reactors is their high mobility and extended operational cycles. Antares and Valar use tiny nuclear fuel particles coated with ceramic and silicon materials to power their reactors, with the entire system transportable by aircraft or truck in container form, capable of operating for approximately five years without refueling. Radiant's Kaleidos can be refueled up to three times, extending its lifecycle to as long as twenty years, making it suitable not only for short-term emergency power supply but also for long-term, high-demand energy needs.

From an industrial perspective, this trend could bring new economic growth opportunities to the Los Angeles area. Stephen Cheung, head of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, believes that if these companies continue to scale up, they will bring high-skilled jobs, supply chain activity, private investment, and elevate the region's standing in next-generation energy and industrial innovation. With rising demand for reliable power from AI data centers, hospitals, and military facilities, the market potential for portable nuclear power is expanding.

However, while advanced nuclear technology has existed for years, the real challenge lies in achieving scalable manufacturing, standardized deployment, and sustained safe operations. Valar Atomics emphasizes that many advanced nuclear designs have historically struggled to achieve economies of scale, and the key now is to turn construction, deployment, and operation into a replicable system. For these Los Angeles companies, technical validation is only the first step; ahead lie multiple hurdles including regulatory licensing, public safety communication, cost control, and customer adoption.
