Ontario Power Generation Nuclear Waste Management Facility Second Quarter Performance Report Released

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) recently released its second quarter performance report for its nuclear waste management facilities, providing a detailed assessment of the facilities' performance in terms of safety, operations, and environment. This report emphasizes OPG's commitment to continuously improving nuclear waste management practices and providing transparent information to the public.

The report shows that the Total Reportable Incident Frequency (TRIF) for the second quarter was 0.0, far below the target value, indicating significant achievements in ensuring employee safety. In terms of transportation, vehicles used for waste transport safely traveled over 82,000 kilometers, with cumulative mileage exceeding 7 million kilometers, demonstrating the professionalism and responsible attitude of the transportation team.

In terms of environment, no reportable environmental spill events occurred in the second quarter, indicating that the facilities' operations have effectively controlled impacts on the surrounding environment. As environmental regulations become increasingly stringent, OPG continues to be committed to improving environmental performance to ensure sustainable development.

In terms of operations, the Darlington Waste Management Facility successfully transferred 19 dry storage containers (DSCs), reaching a total of 43, slightly exceeding the quarterly target. The Pickering Waste Management Facility transferred 20 DSCs, currently totaling 30, slightly below the quarterly target. The Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) achieved its target of transferring 55 dry storage containers.

To further reduce waste volume, OPG incinerated 1,523 cubic meters of low-level solid waste in the second quarter, exceeding the expected target, reflecting the company's efforts to reduce waste and conserve resources. Waste incineration technology is crucial for the safe and effective degradation of low-level radioactive waste.
