TRISO-X Expands Oak Ridge Nuclear Fuel Campus with Approximately 70 Additional Acres

TRISO-X, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of X-Energy, Inc., announced on August 4 that it has acquired approximately 70 acres of land near its commercial nuclear fuel campus in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to support the continued construction and long-term expansion of its fuel manufacturing facility. Following the acquisition, TRISO-X's total campus footprint in the area has expanded to approximately 180 acres.

The land acquisition was announced at a meeting of the Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board. The newly acquired land comprises two separate parcels and will provide additional space for utility access, equipment staging, fuel storage, and future expansion. TRISO-X stated that this move will support the company's efforts to build an advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing and R&D campus in Oak Ridge.

TRISO-X is currently advancing vertical construction of TX-1, its first commercial fuel manufacturing facility. Company President Joel Duling stated that the additional land will help the company better plan for long-term growth and expand its vision for a nuclear innovation campus. He also noted that East Tennessee is a key base for the company's development, with local partners providing support for the advanced nuclear fuel industry.

X-Energy and TRISO-X have been operating in East Tennessee since 2016 and continue to run a pilot fuel production line at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This operational experience has provided the technical foundation for the company's subsequent commercialization efforts, including obtaining the first commercial license for high-assay low-enriched uranium fuel manufacturing issued by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, as well as conducting irradiation testing at Idaho National Laboratory to support commercial fuel qualification for X-Energy's Xe-100 small modular reactor.

The campus expansion is related to a nuclear energy fund awarded by the State of Tennessee in July 2026. The fund supports the continued development of the TRISO-X fuel manufacturing campus, including plans for a second commercial fuel facility and a dedicated R&D center. Under the plan, the three facilities—TX-1, TX-2, and TX-L—will together form a nuclear fuel campus with commercial-scale manufacturing and R&D capabilities to meet the demand for TRISO particle fuel from advanced reactor projects.
