Copenhagen Atomics Plans to Build Uranium Conversion Production Facility in Denmark
Recently, Copenhagen Atomics and Urenco signed a memorandum of understanding to plan the construction of a dedicated production line in Copenhagen for converting uranium hexafluoride (UF₆) into uranium tetrafluoride (UF₄). The cooperation will focus on facility design, establishing a link for enriched uranium feedstock to enter the molten salt fuel manufacturing stage, and supporting Copenhagen Atomics in improving its fuel supply capability.

The planned production line will be located within Copenhagen Atomics' fuel facility, where the company will procure enriched uranium hexafluoride, chemically convert it into uranium tetrafluoride, and then use it to formulate high-purity fuel salt. In addition to serving its own reactor research and development, the products are also planned to be supplied to other commercial molten salt reactor developers and research institutions, enabling the facility to simultaneously undertake internal R&D support and external fuel service functions.
Uranium tetrafluoride is an important feedstock for certain fluoride-salt fuel systems, and the establishment of production capacity will help connect the processing chain from enriched uranium products to reactor fuel salt. Different molten salt reactors have different requirements for fuel composition, chemical form, and purity, and the scope of application of the relevant production line still needs to be matched with specific reactor types; it should not be understood as a universal fuel facility applicable to all molten salt reactors.
This cooperation provides Copenhagen Atomics with a new supply chain arrangement for advancing reactor research and development and fuel manufacturing. The memorandum of understanding clarifies the direction of collaboration between the two parties; the actual construction of the production line, the formation of stable production capacity, and the realization of external supply still require subsequent engineering implementation and product verification. The focus of next-step reporting on the project should be on design progress, construction arrangements, and the actual formation of fuel salt production capacity.
