Sandia National Laboratories Awarded $3.38 Million to Develop Next-Generation Nuclear Reactor Fuel

Recently, according to U.S. media reports, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a $3.38 million grant to Sandia National Laboratories to develop advanced analytical tools to advance the production and deployment of next-generation nuclear reactor fuel.

It is reported that Brandon·Williams, Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), and Deborah·Frincke, Deputy Director of Sandia National Laboratories, announced at a press conference that the project is named “Transuranic Reactor Fuel Pathway Sociotechnical Analysis, Techno-Economics, and Coordination” (TRU-PATH). The core of the project lies in establishing a new analytical platform and safety assurance framework to evaluate safety, nuclear security, and techno-economic issues associated with scaling up advanced reactor fuel production.

Sandia National Laboratories stated that the TRU-PATH project will focus on transuranic fuel recycling and safety assurance design, assisting nuclear fuel developers in overcoming obstacles to commercial-scale production and promoting the transition of emerging fuel technologies from laboratory research to practical engineering applications.

As an important component of the U.S. Department of Energy's overall strategy to strengthen domestic nuclear fuel capabilities, the launch of this project will provide a safer and more reliable fuel supply chain guarantee for next-generation advanced reactors, further consolidating the United States' global competitive advantage in the fields of advanced nuclear energy and nuclear safety regulation.
