First New Centrifuge of Centrus Energy Rolls Off Production Line, Boosting Uranium Enrichment Expansion

Recently, U.S. nuclear fuel enrichment company Centrus Energy announced that it has successfully completed the manufacturing of the first new centrifuge for its multi-billion-dollar uranium enrichment capacity expansion program and has officially launched interstate transportation of the equipment, shipping it from Tennessee to the Piketon enrichment plant in Ohio.

It is reported that the new centrifuge was manufactured at Centrus Energy's facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and will undergo final assembly and testing upon arrival in Ohio. Centrus Energy plans to install multiple new centrifuge cascade arrays at the Piketon enrichment plant to achieve a comprehensive upgrade of commercial low-enriched uranium (LEU) and high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) production capacity.

According to the project roadmap published by Centrus Energy, the first batch of new uranium enrichment capacity is expected to enter commercial operation in 2029. As the expansion project continues to advance and cascade arrays are installed in succession, the centrifuge manufacturing rate and on-site delivery scale at the Oak Ridge facility will also grow in a stepped manner.

As the only company in the United States currently possessing independent centrifuge enrichment technology and HALEU production qualification, the rollout and delivery of Centrus Energy's first new centrifuge not only marks a substantive breakthrough in its multi-billion-dollar expansion program, but also lays a critical foundation for the United States to rebuild its domestic nuclear fuel supply chain, reduce dependence on imported nuclear fuel, and ensure fuel security for next-generation advanced nuclear reactors.
