Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and several nuclear energy companies jointly announced that they will invest a total of $15 billion to build a nationwide advanced nuclear reactor development and equipment manufacturing center in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

It is reported that the project is primarily driven and supported by private capital and is expected to create approximately 10,000 high-paying technical jobs locally over the next five years. The plan aims to completely reshape Oak Ridge's nuclear energy industrial landscape by shutting down legacy gaseous diffusion facilities and building new advanced nuclear fuel fabrication plants, uranium enrichment facilities, and modular reactor production lines, establishing a reactor manufacturing supply chain system featuring "localized mass production and nationwide supply."

The nuclear energy companies participating in the construction of this manufacturing center include industry leaders such as TRISO-X, Radiant, Orano, and Kairos Power. Tim Walsh, Assistant Secretary of DOE's Office of Environmental Management, noted that in addition to delivering clean electricity to the large power grid, the microreactors produced (such as Radiant's 1-megawatt-class reactor, which can operate continuously for 5 years without refueling) will also completely replace diesel generators in remote islands and regions such as Alaska, solving energy supply challenges in off-grid areas.

Leveraging the research heritage of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the nuclear power operations system of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Tennessee is accelerating its transformation into America's next-generation nuclear energy manufacturing hub. U.S. officials added that, relying on the advanced nuclear technologies and equipment produced at this base, future efforts will further extend deeply into frontier fields such as nuclear medicine diagnostics, deep space exploration, and deep-sea unmanned systems.
