Recently, US nuclear energy startup NuCube Energy launched high-temperature hardware testing of the NuSun microreactor at the Utah Energy Laboratory in the United States, marking new progress in the commercial deployment of its solid-state fission microreactor.

NuCube, in collaboration with Brigham Young University (BYU), is using a dedicated induction furnace to simulate ultra-high-temperature thermal environments, focusing on verifying core thermal environments up to 1,100°C, energy conversion performance, and integrated industrial heat supply applications. It is understood that NuSun adopts tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) particle fuel and supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle technology, capable of covering more than 90% of the industrial process heat market, and plans to launch a 15 MWe unit for heavy industry and a 1.3 MWe unit for remote areas.

In terms of physical reactor deployment, NuCube is advancing the construction of its first Advanced Research Test reactor (ART) at the Idaho State University (ISU) campus, targeting first criticality in 2029; meanwhile, it has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Alaska Fund to advance distributed deployment in remote off-grid communities.

To address the industry pain point of excessively high on-site operation and maintenance costs for microreactors, NuCube is collaborating with Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to develop a digital twin-based autonomous remote operation and AI predictive maintenance system, enabling fully automated startup and shutdown and islanded operation. Currently, the company has raised $500 million through a reverse merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) to accelerate the commercialization of nuclear energy technology.
