The 8th International Radiation Protection School Held in Stockholm
The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, in collaboration with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) and the Centre for Radiation Protection Research (CRPR) at Stockholm University, will hold the 8th International Radiation Protection School (IRPS) in Stockholm, Sweden, from 10 to 14 August 2026.

This five-day course is designed for early-career professionals in the nuclear and related fields, with a focus on helping participants systematically understand the international radiation protection system and master its practical application in emerging scenarios. The curriculum will cover the scientific foundations, historical evolution, development trajectory of the radiation protection system, and its translation into regulatory and national frameworks.
According to the organisers, participants will learn foundational knowledge from experts involved in the development of the international radiation protection system, and engage in discussions on scientific evidence, ethical considerations, and practical experience through lectures and interactive case studies. The course emphasises critical thinking, requiring participants to understand the interrelationships between scientific research, international policy, and technical standards, and to consider how the protection system can be applied in different contexts.
The training includes case studies on emergency and recovery management, roundtable discussions with senior regulatory officials, and a mini-workshop for participants. The workshop will feature a selection of abstracts submitted by participants before the course, focusing on practical challenges in the application of the radiation protection system and integrating course content with participants' own professional experience.
The course will also address frontier science, emerging technologies, and application scenarios in the field of radiation protection, with discussions covering radiobiology, epidemiology, outer space activities, small modular reactors, medical applications, and social sciences.
The International Radiation Protection School programme is adjusted annually in response to industry developments and future challenges, aiming to support the cultivation of a new generation of professionals and promote the continued development of the radiation protection culture. The course also examines how the radiation protection system can be integrated with next-generation technologies and other innovative applications to address new safety challenges.
