TVA Preserves Bellefonte Nuclear Plant Site for SMR Development, Accelerates Negotiations with GE Vernova Hitachi

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is preserving the unfinished Bellefonte Nuclear Plant in Jackson County, Alabama for potential future development. Based on current progress, TVA is accelerating negotiations with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, and if the two parties ultimately reach an agreement, this long-idle nuclear plant site could be used to deploy multiple BWRX-300 small modular reactors.

TVA spokesperson Scott Fiedler stated that the agency's current goal is to protect and preserve the Bellefonte site for future energy development. Small modular reactors are one of the technologies TVA is considering when evaluating potential power generation options, but no final decision has been made yet. GE Vernova Hitachi is one of the partners TVA is in contact with, and the discussions between the two parties include the construction of multiple BWRX-300 units at the Bellefonte site.

The Bellefonte Nuclear Plant project was initiated in 1975, but construction was halted in 1988 due to local electricity demand falling below initial projections, and the site has remained in a state of abandonment since then. Today, with growing electricity demand across multiple regions of the United States, rising energy security concerns, and renewed policy and industry attention on nuclear energy, this former site has once again entered the development spotlight.

Supporters believe that restarting nuclear development at Bellefonte would help enhance regional power generation capacity and support future economic and industrial growth in North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley region. U.S. Representative Dale Strong stated that North Alabama is ready to play a leading role in America's energy renaissance, with the local workforce and industrial base well-positioned to accommodate related investments, and Jackson County and surrounding areas are also eager to unlock the potential of the Bellefonte site.
