Rosatom Manufactures Innovative Equipment for Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 in Turkey

According to reports, Atommash, the machine-building plant of Rosatom in the Rostov Region, has completed the manufacture of a full set of high-tech equipment for the turbine building of Akkuyu NPP Unit 2. This is the first time Atommash has produced a Separator-Steam Superheater (SPP), which is used to ensure the operation of the turbine unit. Rostov Region Governor Yury Slyusar and Igor Kotov, head of Rosatom's machine-building division, attended the equipment completion ceremony.

Kotov said that on the occasion of the plant's 50th anniversary, Atommash for the first time manufactured one of the most complex products in the field of nuclear power machine building——the world's most innovative separator-steam superheater for low-speed turbine units. He noted that among the machine-building division's orders, equipment for turbine buildings using such high-efficiency turbines has already been adopted at 12 nuclear power plants, and that this is not merely a single new product but marks the launch of serial production, another important milestone in the history of the Russian nuclear industry. Slyusar stated that Atommash has returned to a period of high-load operation, and that the plant's equipment has already been put into operation at nuclear power plants in India, China, Turkey, and Egypt.

It is understood that the separator-steam superheater for Akkuyu NPP adopts a unique horizontal layout. This modification optimizes the structural design, replacing the traditional four units with two, reducing the metal consumption of the equipment while improving efficiency, reliability, and economy. The equipment is a large-scale nuclear power component, with a diameter of 4.5 meters, comparable to a reactor, a length of more than 22 meters, and a single unit weighing 320 tonnes. To improve manufacturing efficiency, Atommash applied digital geometric modeling and a number of advanced processes in welding, reducing assembly workload by 8.4%, with some operations reduced by as much as 27%.

Akkuyu NPP is Turkey's first nuclear power plant under construction. The project includes four Russian-designed VVER-1200 Generation III+ reactor units, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW. Once all four units are in operation, the annual power generation will be approximately 35 billion kWh, which can meet about 10% of Turkey's electricity demand. The project is the first in the global nuclear industry to be implemented under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model.

Atommash is a flagship enterprise in Russia's machine-building sector, specializing in the manufacture of reactors and steam generators for large nuclear power plants. Since 2023, the plant has manufactured 9 reactors and 35 steam generators for Rosatom's new nuclear power units at home and abroad. It is currently producing two of the latest-type reactor pressure vessels and 12 steam generators for Units 3 and 4 of Egypt's El-Dabaa NPP. Atommash will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026.

It is reported that this equipment delivery marks the entry of the turbine building construction of Akkuyu NPP Unit 2 into the equipment installation phase, laying the foundation for subsequent commissioning and grid-connected power generation. At the same time, the serial production of horizontal separator-steam superheaters at Atommash will provide technical support for its equipment orders for 12 nuclear power plant turbine buildings, further consolidating Russia's competitiveness in the global nuclear power equipment manufacturing sector.
