Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety to Host First Advanced Reactor Safety Technology Symposium
The Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS) announced that it will host the 1st Symposium on Advanced Reactor Safety Technology (SARST 2026) on September 1-2, 2026, at the Grand Ballroom on the first floor of the Commodore Hotel Busan. The event aims to facilitate exchanges on domestic and international advanced reactor technology trends and safety regulation issues, promoting technical communication and cooperation among regulatory bodies, developers, and research institutions. As the inaugural symposium, SARST is planned to be held annually thereafter. This year's conference will be divided into a plenary session and two technical sessions, covering topics such as the development of regulatory frameworks for advanced reactors, regulatory research progress, responses to standard design certification for innovative small modular reactors (i-SMR), and verification plans for related design features, among other subjects.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Tauklarify, a new brain imaging agent for the evaluation of Alzheimer's disease. The drug, also known as MK-6240, is a radioactive diagnostic agent for positron emission tomography (PET) in adults, primarily indicated for adults with cognitive impairment who require physician assessment of abnormal tau protein accumulation in the brain. The twisted, insoluble fibrous deposits formed by tau protein are believed to be associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. U.S. health technology company Function Health recently secured $450 million in growth funding from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund. The company stated that the funds will be used to expand user coverage of its testing and medical imaging platform. The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) is developing a framework to measure the clinical and economic value of interventional radiology, aiming to expand the specialty's role in health system planning, payment reimbursement, and patient management. According to reports, SIR has partnered with triLumen Health Partners to develop a strategic roadmap focused on identifying and quantifying the contributions of interventional radiology in academic medical centers, community hospitals, and outpatient settings. In September, NIIEFA (D.V. Efremov Scientific Research Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus), a subsidiary of Rosatom, will jointly conduct comparative measurements in the fields of radiation monitoring (RM) and individual dose monitoring (IDM) with Ritverts JSC and the A.M. Nikiforov All-Russian Center for Emergency and Radiation Medicine. The work will be carried out under the supervision and support of experts from the D.I. Mendeleev All-Russian Research Institute for Metrology. The focus of these comparative measurements is to verify the accuracy, reliability, and consistency of measurement results obtained by different radiation safety monitoring methods and equipment. Through unified comparison, the performance of various instruments in workplace radiation level assessment, surface contamination monitoring, and individual exposure dose recording can be further confirmed, thereby enhancing the credibility of final radiation dose assessments.

On August 14, Philippine authorities conducted a raid on Davao Mighty Steel Corp., a steel manufacturing plant located in Barangay Ilang, Bunawan District, Davao City. The operation followed an investigation launched by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after receiving reports that the company was involved in the production and sale of substandard steel rebar, with the scope of the investigation subsequently expanding after radioactive isotopes were detected in commercially sold DMS rebar. The operation was led by the National Bureau of Investigation, with the participation of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), and was supported by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), the Philippine Air Force, the Philippine Coast Guard's Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear emergency response units, the Coast Guard Special Operations Group, and the Army's 10th Infantry Division.
