U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration Extends Savannah River Site Management and Operating Contract to September 2027

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) announced on August 10 that it has exercised the remaining option on the Savannah River Site (SRS) Management and Operating contract with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC, extending contract performance through September 30, 2027, with an estimated contract value of $2.3 billion.

NNSA stated that exercising this remaining option will help maintain continuity and stability of the contractor workforce, allowing related work to continue advancing around the agency's critical missions.

The current SRS Management and Operating contract was originally scheduled to expire on September 30, 2026, and included a 12-month option covering October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. This extension means that the existing contractual arrangement will continue until the new contract evaluation is completed.

Previously, NNSA issued a Request for Proposals for the SRS Management and Operating contract on February 27 and received related bid proposals in May, and is currently evaluating the proposals.

Under the procurement schedule, the new contract is intended to be a stand-alone, performance-based Management and Operating contract. The contract has a base term of 5 years, including a 4-month transition period; it also includes six renewal options, consisting of one 5-year option, one 3-year option, three 2-year options, and one 1-year option. If all options are exercised, the maximum contract term would be 20 years and 4 months, with an estimated total value of $61.5 billion.

It is noted that the Savannah River Site is a 310-square-mile Cold War-era nuclear facility under the U.S. Department of Energy, historically used to produce nuclear materials for nuclear weapons. It currently undertakes missions such as nuclear material processing and storage, radioactive waste management, as well as environmental stewardship and nuclear-related technology research and development.
