Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant Launches Environmental Monitoring System, Recording Ecological Data to Build a "Digital Memory"

On August 10, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Mersin Province announced that its deployed high-tech environmental monitoring system has been put into operation, which will digitally record and track ecological environment changes around the plant site. The operator stated that the system not only serves the plant's own environmental compliance but also sets a new standard for environmental management in Türkiye.

In terms of marine ecological monitoring, the modern chemical analysis laboratory activated on site is monitoring seawater quality in real time, regularly measuring multiple parameters such as water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen levels, and fish diversity. Through these data, the plant's impact on the marine ecosystem will be transparently documented. Particularly noteworthy is the diffuser system, which enables controlled discharge of thermal effluent into the sea to maintain ecological balance. Scholars have pointed out that this system will establish an "ecological memory bank" for the region. The collected data, designed in accordance with EU and international nuclear energy standards, not only ensures plant safety but also enhances Türkiye's data accumulation capabilities in the field of environmental science.

Once completed, the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 35 million tons annually and support Türkiye's net-zero emission targets. Against the backdrop of rising pressure for energy transition, the project attempts to combine low-carbon electricity supply with environmental monitoring mechanisms, and the transparency of its subsequent operations and the degree of data disclosure will become key points of external attention.
