Armenia to Discuss New Nuclear Power Plant Options with Rosatom

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol·Pashinyan (Nikol Pashinyan) stated at a press conference on September 3 that Alexey·Likhachev (Alexey Likhachev), Director General of Rosatom, will visit Armenia in September, and the two sides will discuss possible options for constructing a new nuclear power plant within Armenia.

Pashinyan noted that Armenia expects Likhachev's visit to bring forward Russia's specific proposals regarding the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Armenia. He stated that Armenia will prioritize economic viability and project pricing when selecting a nuclear power project, with the goal of securing the “most cost-effective” construction plan.

In May of this year, the Russian side indicated that it had submitted a nuclear power plant design proposal to Armenia capable of meeting the country's long-term energy needs. Subsequently, Pashinyan confirmed that Armenia had received the large-scale nuclear power plant design proposal provided by Rosatom, which is intended to secure Armenia's energy supply for many years to come.

Pashinyan also noted that the Armenian government leans toward constructing a modular nuclear power plant. At this stage, Armenia is still comparing different technological routes and construction options.
