UK Regulator Initiates Design Assessment of Xe-100 Reactor

The UK regulator has formally initiated the assessment of the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor design proposed by X-energy, marking an important step for the UK in developing advanced nuclear technology. This decision follows the completion of a review by the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of the application from X-energy UK Holdings Limited.

In the same period last year, Centrica signed a joint development agreement with an X-energy subsidiary, planning to deploy Xe-100 reactors in the UK and selecting Hartlepool in northeast England as the preferred site, with the potential to build up to 6 million kilowatts of nuclear power plant capacity in the future.
The Generic Design Assessment (GDA) is a comprehensive assessment conducted by the UK Office for Nuclear Regulation, the Environment Agency, and Natural Resources Wales of new reactor designs proposed for deployment in the UK, aimed at ensuring their safety, reliability, and environmental impact meet strict standards. This assessment is independent of site-specific construction applications, and only after passing all stages of assessment can the relevant permits and approvals be obtained.
Prior to initiating the GDA, X-energy had already conducted preliminary communications with UK regulators on specific aspects of the Xe-100 design and is currently undergoing a Tier 3 preliminary design review. The entire GDA assessment process is expected to take approximately three years.
This application was submitted based on the progress of the Xe-100 review in the United States, and both parties will actively leverage cooperation between UK and US nuclear regulators to incorporate US review documents and safety analyses into the UK assessment process.
Over the past year, the collaborating parties have completed early project preparation work, including communications with regulators, applying to enter the GDA process, and applying for inclusion in the UK government's “Advanced Nuclear Pipeline” list. The review results of the list are expected to be announced soon, indicating the future direction of the project.
The CEO of X-energy stated that the company is actively advancing the scaled deployment of its technology in both the US and the UK, and that the partnership with Centrica will accelerate the development of the Hartlepool project and lay the foundation for deploying Xe-100 reactors across the UK.
The CEO of Centrica emphasized that the application of advanced nuclear technology can not only enhance the UK's energy security but also bring enormous economic benefits and job opportunities to the UK. Currently, the collaborative team has initiated site surveys and planning permission applications, and is working with local institutions to promote workforce training, preparing for the smooth implementation of future projects.
