The UK government has approved the regulatory assessment phase for advanced reactors, marking an important step forward for the construction of a new generation of nuclear power plants. X-energy and Centrica are collaborating to build a new generation of nuclear power plants in the UK using the Xe-100 advanced modular reactor, with the first project sited at Hartlepool. This collaboration is of great significance, marking substantial progress on the UK's nuclear energy development path and laying the foundation for broader nuclear power plant construction in the future.

Alistair Black, Vice President and UK Market Lead at X-energy, emphasized that since signing the cooperation agreement with Centrica, both parties have been jointly developing the first project at Hartlepool and subsequent nuclear power plant fleet plans. Currently, X-energy is also actively working with local partners to train workers and build the necessary skills, including establishing a new Nuclear and Electrical Trades Academy dedicated to supporting workforce development and training. At the same time, they are actively designing and refining supply chain strategies to ensure the smooth progress of the project.
To ensure the safety and reliability of the reactor design, the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) will rigorously test whether the Xe-100 reactor design meets UK construction and operational standards. This assessment is expected to take approximately three years and is a prerequisite for the project to obtain site licensing and operating permits. Clay Sell, CEO of X-energy, believes that the UK possesses the industrial strength, nuclear expertise, and policy determination to lead the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies, and is committed to establishing the necessary partnerships and supply chains.
Chris O'Shea, CEO of Centrica, stated that the project is crucial to the UK's energy future and emphasized that energy security is the foundation of national security. Deploying advanced nuclear technology and adding 6 gigawatts of generating capacity will not only strengthen the UK's energy security but also create enormous economic value and a large number of high-skilled jobs, building a resilient, low-carbon energy system for the UK to power homes and industry.
