Ukraine and Sweden Extend Nuclear and Radiation Safety Cooperation Agreement

On September 17, 2026, during the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Vienna, Ukraine and Sweden officially extended their cooperation agreement in the field of nuclear and radiation safety for five years. The heads of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority jointly signed the extension document.

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine confirmed this outcome in an official statement, noting that the heads of the two countries' national nuclear regulatory bodies had reached agreement on continued cooperation for the next five years, laying the foundation for further deepening bilateral nuclear safety technical collaboration.

During the meeting, representatives of Ukraine and Sweden held in-depth discussions on the specific implementation of joint projects. The two sides' future cooperation will focus on four core areas, including licensing activities for the use of medical radiation equipment, and promoting the comprehensive alignment of Ukraine's nuclear safety laws and regulations with unified European standards.

In addition, the cooperation also includes providing systematic training and professional skills development support for Ukrainian professionals, and jointly developing communication and information dissemination tools in the field of nuclear and radiation safety to enhance public trust and information transparency.

The head of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, Michael Nohenhauer, explicitly confirmed at the meeting that Sweden is prepared to continue and expand its partnership with Ukraine. He also stated that the Swedish side has a strong interest in learning from and drawing on Ukraine's practical experience in conducting regulatory activities under special wartime conditions.

The successful extension of this agreement not only provides a solid institutional guarantee for the two sides to further exchange knowledge and experience and develop joint projects, but also injects lasting momentum into comprehensively enhancing Ukraine's nuclear and radiation safety level under complex geopolitical circumstances.
