UK Poll Shows Nearly Half of Public Support Nuclear Energy Development

A new UK opinion poll shows that nearly half of respondents support the country's development of nuclear energy to address climate change and energy security challenges. Although public concerns over nuclear power plant safety persist, with growing awareness of the intermittency of renewable energy and rising calls to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the role of nuclear energy in the UK's energy mix is attracting increasing attention. The survey results show that 48% of respondents consider nuclear energy an important component of achieving net-zero emission targets, while 29% hold opposing views.

The main reasons for supporting nuclear energy include its reliability and low-carbon characteristics. Unlike renewable sources such as wind and solar, nuclear power plants can generate electricity steadily around the clock, unaffected by weather conditions. This is crucial for ensuring the stability of electricity supply, especially during peak demand periods. Additionally, nuclear energy produces extremely low greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and thereby slowing the pace of climate change.

However, the survey also reveals ongoing public concerns over nuclear power plant safety. The impacts of the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear accidents remain lingering, and many people worry about the possibility of similar events occurring. Furthermore, the treatment and storage of nuclear waste remain a long-standing challenge that requires safe and reliable solutions. Nevertheless, a portion of respondents believe that new nuclear technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), can effectively reduce risks and enhance safety.

It is worth noting that support for nuclear energy varies across different age groups. Younger people tend to be more supportive of nuclear energy than older generations, which may be related to their sense of urgency about climate change and their optimism about technological progress. Additionally, residents living in areas with higher energy demand are also more likely to support nuclear energy development, as they are more concerned about the stability and reliability of electricity supply.

This opinion poll provides important reference for the UK government in formulating future energy policies. With the net-zero emission target drawing closer, the government needs to weigh various energy sources to ensure economic sustainability, environmental friendliness, and energy security.
