World Nuclear Association: Global Nuclear Power Investment Must Reach $250 Billion Annually to Support Tripling of Installed Capacity by 2050

Global nuclear power investment is expected to see significant growth, with annual investment needs potentially exceeding $250 billion by 2050 to meet rising world energy demand. According to a report by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), this investment scale aims to at least triple global nuclear power installed capacity and is supported by 38 countries. This represents a potential investment opportunity of up to $6 trillion for the nuclear power industry, attracting widespread attention.

In addition to government funding, private sector capital participation is crucial to the comprehensive development of nuclear power. The report emphasizes that investment should not only focus on new nuclear power plant construction but also expand the nuclear fuel cycle to support large-scale operations, ensure energy supply, and enhance overall industry stability. This requires comprehensive investment covering the entire industrial chain, from uranium mining to nuclear waste management.

As a reliable and low-carbon energy source, nuclear power is essential for meeting growing electricity demand, strengthening energy security, and achieving climate change goals. To achieve sustainable development of the nuclear power industry, the report recommends six key steps to transform nuclear power from a sector primarily reliant on public and project financing into a broader, investable energy infrastructure asset class.

The World Nuclear Association believes that by strengthening institutional support, standardizing business models, improving measurability of risk and returns, establishing revenue market mechanisms, increasing capacity and supply chain maturity, and developing financial instruments, the nuclear power industry can be developed into an attractive area for long-term investment, drawing on the successful experience of other high-capital-intensive energy sectors such as offshore wind and liquefied natural gas. Meanwhile, strategic uranium reserves are also being increased to further safeguard energy supply security.

Global targets for nuclear power installed capacity growth are also driving investment in uranium mining and nuclear fuel supply chain development, particularly in major uranium-producing countries such as Kazakhstan, Canada, and Namibia. With these investments, uranium resources will be developed and utilized more efficiently, providing a solid foundation for the future development of nuclear power.
