Canadian Nuclear Waste Management Organization Publishes Final Design for Centre of Expertise in Ontario
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has published the final design for its "Centre of Expertise," to be located in the Township of Ignace, Ontario. Ignace is one of the host communities for Canada's deep geological repository project for used nuclear fuel. With an investment of approximately CAD 50 million and expected to open in 2028, the centre is positioned as a key platform supporting the construction and long-term operation of the repository.

According to the NWMO, the Centre of Expertise design incorporates input from the local community and will feature flexible multi-purpose spaces, educational areas, public viewing galleries, interactive exhibits, and learning zones, while emphasizing integration with the natural environment and a location that facilitates connection to community facilities. The centre will have a floor area of approximately 55,000 square feet and will accommodate 160 to 200 NWMO staff, with future functions including research and development, public communication, knowledge sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The NWMO stated that the facility will serve as a foundational pillar for the entire project and will become a landmark of interest for local residents and visitors. In addition to supporting the long-term nuclear waste management program, the centre is also expected to bring high-value employment opportunities and attract scientists, experts, and visitors from around the world. Christina Van Drunen, NWMO Vice-President of Operations, stated that the final design reflects the integration of nature, knowledge, and community, and that its development would not have been possible without the years of participation and feedback from community members.
The Government of Canada selected deep geological disposal as the long-term management approach for used nuclear fuel in 2007. The NWMO is responsible for designing and implementing this program under the Nuclear Fuel Waste Act, and following a 14-year consent-based siting process, selected the area in northwestern Ontario, near Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace, as the project site in 2024. Project funding comes entirely from Canadian nuclear fuel waste owners and is built on long-term technical research, public engagement, and Indigenous consultation.
Currently, Canada's used nuclear fuel is stored in interim facilities at reactor and laboratory sites. According to NWMO plans, construction of the deep geological repository is expected to begin in the early to mid-2030s, pending necessary permits, at a depth of more than 600 metres underground, with an underground footprint of approximately 2 kilometres by 3 kilometres, and is expected to become operational between 2040 and 2045. The repository will use a combination of engineered and natural barriers to provide long-term containment and isolation of used nuclear fuel.
