Embalse Nuclear Power Plant Life Extension Experience Boosts Argentina's Nuclear Power Service Exports
Argentina's Embalse Nuclear Power Plant life extension project has become an important technical foundation for the country's nuclear power service exports. Between 2015 and 2019, the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant underwent a large-scale refurbishment, with core work including reactor tube replacement, fuel channel replacement, steam generator renewal, and upgrade of the plant's computer control system, enabling the unit to operate for another 30 years.

Nuclear power plant life extension is one of the most technically challenging projects in the energy sector, requiring the dismantling, inspection, assessment, and refurbishment of key equipment that has been in operation for decades, with stringent requirements for engineering precision, quality control, and project management capability. Through the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant project, Argentina has for the first time fully implemented this complex process.
Preparation for the project began years before the unit was taken offline. The relevant teams conducted surveys and planning for the plant's various systems, identifying item by item the modifications required to enter a new operating cycle. In 2015, after more than 30 years of operation, the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant was shut down and formally entered the main phase of life extension refurbishment.
In 2019, the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant resumed operation, beginning its second 30-year operating cycle. Subsequent operating performance showed that the refurbishment achieved its intended goals, with the plant setting a record for electricity generation and becoming one of the better-performing nuclear units in Argentina.
The experience accumulated through this project has also driven the spillover of Argentina's nuclear power capabilities. Through the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant life extension project, Nucleoeléctrica Argentina has developed professional expertise in the field of nuclear power plant life extension, and this experience is now also supporting the follow-up work at the Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant.
At the same time, this capability is being translated into international services. Nucleoeléctrica Argentina has provided services, spare parts, and training to CANDU reactor operators in several countries, and recently signed an agreement with Romania to cooperate on reactor life extension. For Argentina, the Embalse Nuclear Power Plant life extension project has not only extended the operating life of a nuclear power plant, but has also become an important foundation for its participation in the international nuclear power service market.
