Argentine President Javier Milei Appoints Former Bariloche Mayor Gennuso as Vice President of the Atomic Energy Commission

Argentine President Javier·Milei has appointed Gustavo·Gennuso as the new Vice President of the Argentine National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) through Decree No. 673/2026. Gennuso previously served as Mayor of San Carlos de Bariloche (2015–2023), and this appointment brings the former mayor into a key institution in Argentina's nuclear sector, also reflecting the political expansion of the ruling party “La Libertad Avanza” in Río Negro Province ahead of the 2027 elections. Former Vice President Luis·Alfredo·Tomás·Rovere has stepped down, as part of the restructuring published in the Official Gazette.

Decree No. 655/2026 shows the CNEA undergoing a major restructuring, with its administrative structure reduced by 58%, organizational units cut from 675 to 272, and a dramatic shift in operational methods. Gennuso was born in 1959 in Azul, Buenos Aires Province; he began with a mechanical engineering degree from the National University of La Plata and graduated as a nuclear engineer from the Balseiro Institute in 1986. His career includes work at the Bariloche Atomic Center and international projects related to nuclear reactors in Algeria, Iran, Egypt, and other countries in the 1990s. Prior to assuming his current position, he had already been appointed President of the Board of the Intecnus Foundation of the Bariloche Nuclear Medicine Center. Those close to him say the appointment was based on professional and managerial experience, with no local political interference.
