U.S. Department of Energy Extends Princeton University Contract to Operate PPPL
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Princeton University have extended the contract under which Princeton University manages and operates the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). The laboratory is located on Princeton University's Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

Under the new extension, the contract will be renewed for five years starting April 1, 2027. Princeton University expects to strengthen collaboration with faculty and research teams on campus during the contract period, explore next-generation fusion energy research facilities, and enhance laboratory infrastructure and safety to support ongoing operational needs.
Peter Schiffer, Princeton University's Dean for Research and PPPL Vice President, stated that Princeton University will continue its long-term partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, noting that both sides share aligned goals in advancing high-level scientific research. Steve Cowley, Director of PPPL, stated that the renewal will help the laboratory continue advancing cutting-edge scientific research in the coming years.
PPPL has long focused on plasma physics and fusion research, and in recent years its research scope has expanded to include microelectronics, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. The laboratory's primary fusion experimental device is the National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U), which is designed to become one of the world's most powerful spherical tokamaks. The laboratory also operates the Facility for Laboratory Reconnection Experiments (FLARE) for magnetic reconnection research.
In the areas of fusion technology commercialization and industry collaboration, PPPL maintains partnerships with industry and research institutions. The laboratory is one of the selected participants in the U.S. Department of Energy's "Genesis Mission" and is working to accelerate fusion research using artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. Additionally, PPPL collaborates with private companies through channels such as the DOE's Innovation Network for Fusion Energy (INFUSE) and the Fusion Development Milestone Program.
Furthermore, PPPL is partnering with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) and venture capital firm SOSV to advance the New Jersey HAX Plasma Furnace project, promoting the commercialization of plasma technologies and the growth of related startups.
PPPL was established in 1951, originally named "Project Matterhorn," with Lyman Spitzer serving as its founding director. The laboratory has been operated by Princeton University since its inception. PPPL is currently one of 10 national laboratories managed by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science and one of 17 national laboratories within the DOE system.
