UK JET Decommissioning Project to Trial Asset-Based Decommissioning Approach

The JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) project recently announced that it will trial an asset-based decommissioning approach in three areas of the JET facility during the next phase of work. These areas were once part of the power supply infrastructure during JET plasma operations.

This trial work will support the overall development of the Culham Campus and, in conjunction with the Strategic Investment and Development for Energy and AI (STRIDE) programme, facilitate land remediation to create conditions for the installation of a fourth supergrid transformer.

JDR has signed a contract with Ramco UK to undertake the relevant trial work. JDR Engineering Integration Manager Steve Gilligan stated that JDR recognised, through previous building demolition projects, the need to explore different delivery models. The asset-based decommissioning approach helps offset the investment in team mobilisation and engineering preparation, while maximising the value recovered from materials and equipment.

It was noted that JDR will primarily provide information on site conditions, facility safety, and work boundaries to ensure that the contractor operates in accordance with the established specifications. The relevant teams have already conducted multiple site surveys to assess the level of coordination and working conditions required for project implementation.

Teddy Townsend, Business Development Manager at Ramco UK, stated that the project will involve identification of recoverable assets, auctioning, dismantling, decommissioning, and demolition work.

Ramco UK has commenced the relevant operations, and the trial contract is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
