NRC Approves Environmental Assessment for Small Modular Reactor at Texas Industrial Site

NRC Approves Environmental Assessment for Small Modular Reactor at Texas Industrial Site

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently completed the environmental assessment of applications submitted by Long Mott Energy and X-energy, issuing a finding of no significant impact. This conclusion marks a key milestone in the construction permit review process for the advanced reactor project planned for Seadrift, Texas. The project plans to build a 320-megawatt small modular reactor at Dow's industrial manufacturing site in Seadrift to provide electricity and high-temperature industrial steam to the facility. Long Mott Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow, and the project intends to use X-energy's advanced reactor technology to serve the energy needs of industrial facilities along the Texas Gulf Coast.

X-energy says U.S. Department of Energy plans to add up to $1 billion in funding for Texas advanced nuclear reactor project

X-energy says U.S. Department of Energy plans to add up to $1 billion in funding for Texas advanced nuclear reactor project

X-energy CEO Clay Sell said during an earnings call on August 13 that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has informed the company it will add up to $1 billion in public funding for the advanced nuclear energy project it is advancing with Dow Inc. in Texas. Sell stated that total available public funding for the Dow project in Seadrift, Texas, will reach up to $2.15 billion since 2021. The additional funding will carry the same 50-50 cost-sharing requirement as the initial award. The project is supported by the DOE's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP)...

X-Energy and Centrus Sign HALEU Supply Agreement, Accelerating U.S. Advanced Nuclear Fuel Supply Chain

X-Energy and Centrus Sign HALEU Supply Agreement, Accelerating U.S. Advanced Nuclear Fuel Supply Chain

X-Energy and Centrus Energy have signed a low-enriched uranium and high-assay low-enriched uranium supply agreement, marking a more concrete commercialization phase in fuel assurance for U.S. advanced nuclear reactors. Under the agreement, Centrus will provide uranium enrichment services at its American Centrifuge Plant in Pike County, Ohio, with the HALEU to be supplied to X-Energy's fuel subsidiary TRISO-X for the production of TRISO-coated particle fuel at its Oak Ridge, Tennessee fuel fabrication facility, serving the Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled small modular reactor. The significance of this agreement lies not only in the supply itself but also in its phased advance payment arrangement. X-Energy will support Centrus through advance payments...

X-energy and SGL Carbon to Expand Nuclear-Grade Graphite Production Capacity

X-energy and SGL Carbon to Expand Nuclear-Grade Graphite Production Capacity

X-Energy and SGL Carbon announced on August 3 that they have signed a binding agreement to expand production capacity for NBG-18 medium-grained isotropic nuclear-grade graphite. NBG-18 is a critical specialty material for X-Energy's Xe-100 high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, supporting the company's subsequent commercial project deployments. Under the agreement, X-Energy will invest up to $8 million in phases to support the construction of new facilities and equipment upgrades at SGL Carbon's plant in Chedde, France. Upon completion of the expansion, the plant will be capable of producing graphite billets annually sufficient for up to eight Xe-100 reactors. SGL Carbon has also agreed to expand its graphite billet processing capacity in the United States to enhance the stability of this safety-critical material supply chain.
