Site survey work for Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant is nearing completion.

On July 25, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that work at the construction site of Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant—the Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant—is nearing completion.

During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tokayev noted that site surveys for the plant, located near Lake Balkhash, have essentially reached the final stage.

Tokayev emphasized that the Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant project is significant not only for Kazakhstan's future energy supply but also for the training of technical personnel. He mentioned that Kazakhstan would leverage Russian expertise to train technical staff during the project's construction, with a particular focus on building professional capabilities among the younger generation.

Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) is participating in the construction of the Balkhash Nuclear Power Plant. Current plans schedule the start of construction for 2027, with completion set for 2035. Kazakhstan decided to build its first nuclear power plant following a national referendum held in 2024.
