Russian Floating Nuclear Power Plant Improves Air Quality in Arctic City
Recently, the Russian floating nuclear power plant “Akademik Lomonosov” released its latest environmental monitoring report. The report shows that since the nuclear power plant officially took over most of the heating load of Pevek in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in 2022, total pollutant emissions into the local atmosphere have plummeted from 11.64 tons to 2.281 tons, a reduction of nearly 80%.

It is reported that Rosatom has established 11 automated radiation monitoring stations in Pevek and its surroundings to conduct comprehensive monitoring of air, water quality, soil, and waste. Monitoring results indicate that all environmental impact indicators are better than the established national standards, with average levels less than 10% of the maximum permissible values. At the same time, the marine ecosystem of Chaunskaya Bay in the East Siberian Sea has not been adversely affected in any way.
“Akademik Lomonosov” entered commercial operation in May 2020 and is currently the world's only floating nuclear power plant in operation. The vessel is equipped with two 35 MW KLT-40S reactors, providing zero-carbon heat and power to the city of Pevek with a population of 5,000 while also supporting the development of the Baimskaya mining area. Rosatom stated that it is currently building four next-generation 100 MW-class floating nuclear power plants based on RITM-200M reactors to further expand Arctic projects and overseas export markets.
Vladislav Kuznetsov, Governor of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, and Jumberi Tkebuchava, First Deputy Director General of Rosatom, both emphasized that the polar ecological environment is extremely fragile, and the successful application of the floating nuclear power plant not only provides reliable zero-carbon alternative energy for the Arctic's frigid regions but also sets an environmental and engineering model for the comprehensive utilization of nuclear energy in polar regions worldwide.
