Pre-registration Study Launch Meeting for Light Ion Therapy System Held in Hangzhou
On July 26, the pre-registration study launch meeting for the light ion therapy system was held at CAS Ion (Hangzhou) Medical Technology Co., Ltd. The meeting, themed "Focusing on Multi-ion Clinical Research, Empowering Precision Radiotherapy Innovation," discussed the frontier directions of multi-ion therapy, pre-registration study protocols for the therapy system, and related quality control work.
This meeting was hosted by the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Tumor Particle Radiotherapy Equipment and CAS Ion Hangzhou Company, and co-organized by the Sun Yat-sen University–CAS Ion (Lanzhou Taiji) Joint Laboratory of Advanced Radiotherapy Technology and the China-Japan-Korea Tumor Prevention and Control Research Institute. Experts and scholars from fields including clinical radiotherapy, medical physics, equipment R&D, and testing and evaluation attended the meeting.

Multi-ion beam radiotherapy is an important frontier direction in current radiation oncology. Compared with single-ion therapy modalities, the combined irradiation of multiple ion beams such as helium ions, protons, carbon ions, and oxygen ions provides more control means in dose conformal distribution and linear energy transfer (LET) distribution optimization, helping to kill tumor cells while reducing damage to normal tissues, offering new technical pathways for the treatment of complex and refractory tumors.
According to the introduction at the meeting, the light ion therapy system HiTS 200, independently developed by CAS Ion Hangzhou Company, has completed debugging of multiple ions, with key indicators exceeding design requirements. This launch meeting will focus on deploying pre-registration research work, laying the foundation for clinical evaluation of the multi-ion therapy system, development of the supporting treatment planning system, and formulation of physical quality control standards.
During the meeting, multiple experts gave reports on topics including the current status of ion radiotherapy development in China, technological evolution of domestic ion therapy devices, directions of multi-particle therapy for tumors, and LETd optimization and RBE dose prescription systems from carbon ion to multi-ion therapy. The relevant person in charge of CAS Ion Hangzhou Company also introduced the technical characteristics and debugging progress of the light ion therapy device.
In the special discussion session, attending experts discussed the pre-registration study protocol for the helium ion therapy device, focusing on research design, evaluation indicators, quality control standards, and multi-center collaboration mechanisms, and provided opinions on the scientificity, feasibility, and standardization of the protocol. The meeting finally clarified the division of research tasks and progress milestones for the next phase.
This meeting brought together forces from industry, academia, research, medical, and testing sectors in the field of ion radiotherapy. As the pre-registration study progresses, multi-ion combined therapy technology is expected to further enrich China's precision radiotherapy means for tumors, providing support for the subsequent evaluation and application of related therapy systems.
