Anambra State, Nigeria Strengthens Cooperation with Nuclear Regulatory Authority to Enhance Safety Management of Medical Radioactive Materials

The Anambra State Government of Nigeria recently stated that it will strengthen cooperation with the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA) to enhance radiation safety across the state and ensure the safe and compliant use of radioactive materials in medical institutions.

At a meeting held in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Dr. Afam Obidike, the State Commissioner for Health, exchanged views on relevant cooperation with a delegation from the NNRA. The delegation was led by Ekene Efenemoku, the NNRA's Southeast Zonal Coordinator.

Efenemoku stated that the visit aimed to deepen bilateral cooperation and brief the state government on the NNRA's statutory responsibilities. According to his introduction, the authority is responsible for regulating the entire process of radioactive materials, from import to use in hospitals, diagnostic centers, and other licensed facilities, ensuring that relevant operations comply with national regulations and protecting healthcare workers, patients, the public, and the environment from potential harm caused by ionizing radiation.

Obidike commended the NNRA for its regulatory role in promoting the safe and peaceful use of radioactive materials. He said that the Anambra State Government is willing to maintain close cooperation with the authority to further strengthen radiation safety management and improve healthcare service capacity.

He also mentioned that under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, the state government is investing in the development of modern medical infrastructure, including the establishment of an oncology center. Obidike emphasized that the future operation of the center must comply with national and international radiation safety standards, making cooperation with the NNRA crucial.

Efenemoku stated that the NNRA will provide necessary technical and regulatory support to the Anambra State oncology center and other medical institutions using radioactive materials, and will continue to collaborate with the State Ministry of Health to strengthen radiation protection, promote compliance with safety regulations in medical institutions, and create a safer diagnosis and treatment environment for healthcare workers and patients.

Both parties stated that they will continue to advance cooperation to improve healthcare services, protect the environment, and ensure the safe and peaceful use of radioactive materials in Anambra State.
