Adani Group Proposes Two Nuclear Power Plants in India's Odisha State
The Adani Group has submitted a proposal to the Government of Odisha to build two nuclear power plants in the state, with a planned total installed capacity of 5,600 MW and an estimated investment of approximately ₹1.5 trillion. The proposal is seen as a significant move to expand private sector participation in India's civil nuclear energy sector.

According to disclosures, Subrat Tripathy, President of Business Development at Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, formally presented the project concept during a meeting with Odisha's Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo in Bhubaneswar.
In addition to the nuclear power project, the Adani Group also proposed building an ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Odisha and developing multiple pumped storage projects to strengthen the state's energy infrastructure support capacity. The Group stated that the proposed investments are expected to create over 22,000 direct and indirect jobs while enhancing Odisha's power generation capability.
Currently, the proposal remains under government review. Before making a decision, the Government of Odisha will conduct detailed assessments covering land availability, technical feasibility, environmental clearances, and regulatory approvals.
This is another nuclear power development proposal from a private enterprise received by the state, following Tata Power's proposal to build a nuclear power plant in Malkangiri, Odisha. NTPC Limited has also previously expressed interest in developing nuclear energy projects in Odisha.
With the enactment of India's SHANTI Act in 2025, regulated private sector participation in civil nuclear power projects has gained greater institutional scope. As investment continues to grow in Odisha's steel, aluminum, green hydrogen, and data center industries, the demand for stable, round-the-clock power supply has risen, drawing increased attention to the role of nuclear energy in the state's industrial expansion.
