NTPC Plans to Expand Nuclear Power Project Site Studies, Sprinting Toward 30 GW Target
Recently, senior officials of NTPC Limited (NTPC) revealed that, as part of its ambitious goal of achieving 30 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power installed capacity by 2047, the company plans to conduct feasibility studies for proposed nuclear power projects in more states including Uttar Pradesh.

As India's largest energy producer, NTPC currently has a total installed capacity exceeding 91,000 megawatts (MW), meeting one quarter of the nation's electricity demand. Previously, the company has completed feasibility studies at Basai in Madhya Pradesh, Banka in Bihar, and Nabarangpur in Odisha, and plans to include Uttar Pradesh and other regions in the next phase of site selection assessment.
According to the plan, NTPC intends to build nuclear power projects with an average installed capacity of 1,400 MW, consisting of two 700 MW pressurized water reactor (PWR) units. Upon completion, the relevant feasibility study reports must be submitted to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and can only proceed formally after review by the Standing Site Selection Committee and approval by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
It is understood that, to support the Indian government's strategic vision of reaching 100 GW of total nuclear power installed capacity by 2047, NTPC is actively exploring cooperation with global energy giants such as Westinghouse Electric Company of the United States, Rosatom of Russia, and Électricité de France (EDF) to accelerate the deployment of large pressurized water reactor projects in India.
Industry estimates show that building 1 GW of nuclear power capacity typically requires an investment of 150 billion to 200 billion rupees, and imposes strict requirements on continuous water supply and land planning. As NTPC continues to deepen its energy diversification strategy, the comprehensive acceleration of its nuclear power business will provide strong momentum for the green transformation of India's future energy structure.
