India's Ministry of External Affairs: Will continue to deepen strategic cooperation with Russia in nuclear energy and continue to advance the subsequent construction of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant

Randhir Jaiswal, official spokesperson of India's Ministry of External Affairs, stated clearly at a press conference that India is committed to continuing to deepen strategic cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy.

Jaiswal pointed out that cooperation between India and Russia in the field of nuclear energy has a long history, among which the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant project is a model of successful cooperation between the two countries in the energy industry.

He emphasized that India intends to further expand its cooperative relationship with Russia in this field, and that the two sides currently maintain regular dialogue and communication, with relevant technical experts conducting professional discussions on specific matters.

Jaiswal also promised that once new cooperation projects are established in the future, Indian officials will promptly announce relevant progress to the public.

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant project is being advanced in accordance with the intergovernmental cooperation agreement on the construction of a nuclear power plant in India signed by the two countries on November 20, 1988, and the supplementary agreement of June 21, 1998.

Units 1 and 2 of the nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in 2013 and 2016 respectively, and are currently the nuclear power units with the largest single-unit capacity in India.

Units 3 to 6 currently under construction belong to the second and third phases of the nuclear power plant, all adopting VVER-1000 pressurized water reactor technology.

After all six generating units are completed and put into operation, the nuclear power plant will provide strong power support for Tamil Nadu, which has a population of 72 million, and other areas covered by the "Southern India Grid."
