IIT Hyderabad launches nuclear technology training programme

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), in collaboration with Pune-based technology company Crimson Energy Experts Pvt. Ltd. (CEEPL), has launched a three-month full-time residential training programme to train engineers and industry professionals for India's expanding civil nuclear energy sector.

The programme, named "Anugyan—Nuclear Technology Orientation Programme" (NTOP), is described as India's first industry-academia collaborative initiative dedicated specifically to engineering talent development in the nuclear energy sector, with a focus on bridging the gap between academic curricula and nuclear industry engineering practice.

The curriculum combines the teaching and research strengths of IIT Hyderabad with the industry expertise of nuclear professionals from CEEPL. Upon completing all coursework and meeting the requirements, participants will receive a joint certificate issued by IIT Hyderabad and CEEPL.

The programme is open to engineering graduates, working engineering professionals, management personnel from state-owned enterprises, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors, and personnel from equipment manufacturing companies. According to programme information, the course fee is INR 350,000, with accommodation costs charged separately.

B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, stated that the programme reflects the institute's commitment to nurturing future-ready talent and serves India's clean energy development and energy security goals. R.D. Mane, retired Brigadier and President of the Nuclear Energy Division at CEEPL, stated that the training will equip engineers with the professional competencies required for next-generation nuclear projects, including technologies related to small modular reactors (SMRs) and floating nuclear power plants.

India plans to increase its nuclear power generation capacity from the current approximately 8.8 GWe to 100 GWe by 2047, while expanding private sector participation in civil nuclear energy. In line with this goal, the NTOP curriculum comprises 24 modules covering reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, radiation shielding, small modular reactors, nuclear safety, quality assurance, engineering design, regulatory compliance with the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), and simulator-based training, among others.

The first cohort of the training programme has enrolled 25 participants and commenced classes on August 3.
