Kalinin NPP Reaches 850 Billion kWh of Cumulative Power Generation

On August 4, Russia's Kalinin NPP reported that since the commissioning of its first unit, the plant has generated a cumulative total of 850 billion kWh of low-carbon electricity. This output is equivalent to approximately 3.5 years of electricity demand in Russia's Central Federal District.

Kalinin NPP is part of the power division of Rosatom. Viktor Ignatov, the plant's director, stated that the cumulative generation of 850 billion kWh is the result of the long-term dedication and professional commitment of several generations of nuclear workers, built upon the expertise of the operating team, reliable unit performance, and the consistent prioritization of safety. He noted that the plant's next task is to continue ensuring stable operation and maintaining its important role in the power supply of the Tver Region and the Russian grid.

In 2023, Kalinin NPP accounted for 15% of Russia's total nuclear power generation; within the Tver Region's electricity mix, the plant's output accounted for 82%.

Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, stated that the continued development of nuclear technology is of significant importance for future energy supply. He believes that nuclear energy is one of the sustainable and economically viable paths for energy development in the 21st century, and that related goals need to be achieved through the advancement of nuclear technology.

Kalinin NPP is located in Udomlya, Tver Region, Russia, and is a major energy facility in the unified power system of central Russia. The plant is equipped with four VVER-1000 pressurized water reactor units, each with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW.

Currently, the extended operating license for Unit 1 of Kalinin NPP is valid until 2044, and the extended operating license for Unit 2 is valid until 2038. Units 3 and 4 remain within their design service life, with design operating periods extending to 2034 and 2041, respectively, and related license extension efforts are also underway. Based on the current operating license terms, by the time the licenses expire, the cumulative power generation of Kalinin NPP is expected to reach 1.286 trillion kWh.
