French nuclear fleet output drops to 59% of full capacity

On Wednesday, August 12, French nuclear reactors operated at 59% of full capacity, according to RTÉ grid data and Bloomberg calculations, down 1 percentage point from 60% on Tuesday, August 11. EDF, the world's largest nuclear power operator, currently has 34 reactors in operation with a total available capacity of 33,250 MW; France's 57 nuclear reactors normally supply more than two-thirds of the country's electricity.

EDF recently halted power generation at the Gravelines 2 and Bugey 3 reactors, while extending the outage of the Gravelines 3 and 4 units and the Cattenom 4 reactor. As of 6:45 a.m. Paris time that day, the world's largest nuclear plant operator had 34 reactors available, with a total available capacity of 33.25 GW. France's 57 nuclear reactors typically generate more than two-thirds of the country's electricity, so outages at some units can have a significant impact on the overall power balance.

This year, French nuclear power generation has been repeatedly affected by heatwaves and drought. In June and July, EDF suspended operations at some reactors due to high temperatures. Nuclear plants typically require large amounts of water for cooling, and when river water temperatures are too high or water levels are insufficient, unit operations may be constrained by environmental regulations and safety requirements. This means extreme weather is no longer just a demand-side issue for electricity, but also directly affects supply-side stability.

Prior to the latest round of outages, French nuclear output had already shown a 15.6% shortfall last Sunday. If high temperatures persist, river levels remain low, or maintenance times continue to extend, the French electricity market may face more frequent supply fluctuations. For the European electricity market, changes in French nuclear output not only affect domestic prices but also influence cross-border power trading and supply-demand expectations in neighboring countries.
