According to reports, the Groves Isotope Test Reactor achieved first criticality on August 5, 2026, reaching a controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. The reactor is the fifth reactor to achieve this milestone among projects authorized under the U.S. Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program, and the first to reach criticality on private land under the program.
The low-power test reactor is designed to lay the foundation for domestic commercial isotope production in the United States, while demonstrating potential pathways for faster deployment of advanced nuclear energy projects.
FSG joined the project in April 2026, with Century Construction serving as the general contractor. FSG is responsible for tasks related to electrical engineering, instrumentation, control, testing, and verification systems required for reactor operation. FSG stated that due to the highly pioneering nature of the project, some work lacks long-standing industry precedents for reference, and the team collaborated with Century Construction, Oklo, and project engineering personnel throughout construction and commissioning.
FSG Construction Manager Kris Price stated that Century and Oklo entrusting FSG with work critical to project success reflects their confidence in the team's capabilities. FSG noted that the project demonstrates the company's ability to perform specialized electrical and systems work in complex, high-demand facilities.
According to available information, FSG is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and is one of the largest commercial electrical contractors and facility solutions providers in the United States. Oklo is developing fast-neutron nuclear power plants and advancing technologies related to building domestic supply chains for critical isotopes and recycling spent nuclear fuel.
