Japan's Helical Fusion and Tohoku University Launch Social Communication Research on Fusion Energy

Helical Fusion recently announced that it has launched a joint research project with the Takahashi-Kariwara Laboratory of the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University in August 2026, focusing on "ideal communication methods for the social implementation of fusion energy." The project is planned to last approximately one year, with a focus on exploring the communication methods, dialogue mechanisms, and decision-making pathways required for fusion energy to move toward social application.

According to the project plan, both parties will examine cases of existing advanced technologies in areas such as social acceptance and risk perception to study communication strategies needed for the stable application of fusion energy in future society. The research also plans to introduce methods such as "transition design," working backward from an ideal future society to determine the actions and communication approaches that should be taken today.

Helical Fusion stated that this project is not simply about studying how to make society "accept" fusion energy, but rather aims to engage in dialogue with relevant stakeholders: if fusion energy becomes part of the future energy system, what kind of society do we hope to build with it, and how should public dialogue be conducted around that goal.

The Takahashi-Kariwara Laboratory at Tohoku University has long conducted research on the safety of socio-technical systems, with research areas including social acceptance of advanced science and technology, safety improvement strategies for large-scale complex systems based on new safety perspectives, system design under the Safety-II concept, and improving human-machine collaboration and safety levels using anthropometric measurements and human cognitive characteristics.

Professor Noboru Takahashi of Tohoku University stated that fusion energy has attracted attention as a future energy technology and is expected to become an important option for humanity's long-term stable energy supply. However, when communicating with the public, it is necessary to clearly distinguish between facts, possibilities, and risks. A promising technology does not equate to a technology that can immediately solve social problems, and prudent, transparent communication regarding fusion energy is of great importance.

Takaya Taguchi, Representative Director and CEO of Helical Fusion, stated that how new energy technologies communicate with the society that supports them is an issue that must be addressed in the practical application of fusion energy. For the company, this challenge is as important as technological development.

Fusion energy harnesses the same nuclear fusion principle that powers the sun and is regarded as one of the important directions for future low-carbon energy. With the growth of global electricity demand and the rise in power loads driven by emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, research and development and industrialization of fusion energy have attracted increasing attention. In recent years, Japan has also accelerated relevant policy and industrial deployment, proposing a roadmap toward demonstration power generation by the 2030s and promoting public-private investment.

Founded in 2021, Helical Fusion is a spin-off from Japan's National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), primarily advancing commercialization efforts related to helical fusion systems. The company states that its R&D foundation is built on the long-accumulated research results of helical fusion devices from Japanese universities and public research institutions, with the goal of bringing fusion energy to practical application as early as possible.
