Japan's Kyoto Fusioneering Secures Series D Funding Led by Korea-Japan Fusion Fund

IMM Investment Japan (IMMJ) announced on September 1 that it has led the Series D funding round for Kyoto Fusioneering, a Japanese fusion energy company. The investment was made through the "Korea-Japan Fusion Fund," established jointly by Korean and Japanese investors.

The Korea-Japan Fusion Fund, initiated by IMMJ, is positioned as a cross-border project fund designed to connect the capital and industrial networks of major Korean corporations with Japan's cutting-edge technology companies. Investors participating in the fund include strategic investors such as POSCO Holdings, POSCO International, Doosan, Hyundai Motor, and GS Engineering & Construction, as well as financial investors including Octagon Venture Partners. Japanese regional banks and local strategic investors have also participated in the investment.

Kyoto Fusioneering is a deep-tech company in Japan's fusion energy sector, focusing on R&D for key equipment and plant engineering capabilities required for the commercialization of fusion power generation. The company is developing gyrotrons for plasma heating, fuel cycle and supply systems, blankets for recovering reaction energy, and thermal cycle-related technologies.

Under related arrangements, Kyoto Fusioneering is advancing demonstration projects named "UNITY" in Japan, Canada, and the United States to validate these key technologies in environments approximating actual power plants. Proceeds from this funding round will be used to build and further develop demonstration infrastructure including UNITY-1, UNITY-2, and UNITY-3, while strengthening R&D and manufacturing capabilities for equipment such as gyrotrons, recruiting global talent, and expanding the business base.

IMMJ stated that this investment was primarily based on an assessment of Kyoto Fusioneering's proprietary technologies, global business platform, and future growth potential. With the participation of Korean strategic investors from sectors including steel, energy, heavy industry, machinery, and transportation, this collaboration also provides a new platform for Korea-Japan companies to expand cooperation in fusion-related technologies and commercialization efforts.

An IMMJ official stated that the significance of this investment lies in connecting major Korean strategic investors with Japanese technology companies through a single investment platform. Beyond the investment, IMMJ plans to continue supporting technological and commercial cooperation between companies from both countries, and to expand its cross-border investment footprint by leveraging parent company IMM Investment's investment experience, Korea's industrial and capital networks, and Japan's pool of promising companies. Looking ahead, IMMJ will also focus on cutting-edge technology sectors such as semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, and energy, as well as cooperation related to intellectual property, content, and entertainment industries.
