Seoul National University of Science and Technology and Doosan Enerbility Deepen Nuclear Design Cooperation
Seoul National University of Science and Technology (SeoulTech) and Doosan Enerbility recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to conduct industry-academia cooperation in next-generation nuclear power plants, small modular reactors (SMRs), and core nuclear equipment technologies, aiming to enhance competitiveness in nuclear design technology and jointly cultivate specialized research talent.

The signing ceremony was held on September 2 at SeoulTech. Attendees included Seo Young-bin, Senior Vice President of Nuclear Design at Doosan Enerbility, Kim Jong-in, Department Head, along with relevant university officials.
Under the MOU, the two parties will integrate the university's research capabilities with the company's engineering experience in nuclear power plant design to establish a foundational framework for long-term cooperation. The agreement does not specify particular research projects but rather provides a mechanism to support the subsequent identification, validation, and advancement of joint research, technology development, and talent cultivation programs.
The two parties plan to prioritize the assessment of feasibility for research cooperation and commissioned services in core nuclear equipment technologies, innovative design, and reliability assessment; promote technology and personnel exchanges; jointly utilize research facilities; collaborate on building research infrastructure and research centers; cultivate specialized talent around relevant projects; and conduct academic and technical exchanges through seminars, symposiums, and other formats.
SeoulTech stated that it will leverage its engineering research foundation, combined with Doosan Enerbility's industrial experience accumulated in large-scale nuclear power plant design, to build an industry-academia cooperation platform supporting the development of design and assessment technologies for large-scale nuclear power plants, next-generation nuclear power plants, and small modular reactors. Through joint research and personnel exchanges, the two parties hope to connect industrial technology needs with the research and education system, cultivating researchers with practical capabilities in nuclear design and reliability assessment.
Kim Dong-hwan, President of SeoulTech, stated that this cooperation provides a foundation for combining the university's research capabilities with the industry's professional experience, helping to enhance technological competitiveness in next-generation nuclear power plants and small modular reactors, while cultivating talent for the future nuclear industry. The university will continue to expand practical cooperation with the industry to serve the enhancement of Korea's nuclear industry competitiveness.
