Samsung C&T Teams Up with GE, Hitachi and Synthos to Enter Europe's Small Modular Reactor Market

Samsung C&T's construction division has partnered with GE Vernova, Hitachi and Synthos Green Energy (SGE) to expand into Europe's small modular reactor (SMR) market. By integrating technology, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and business development capabilities, the parties aim to establish a business model for the repeat deployment of standardized small modular reactors across European countries.

Samsung C&T announced on the 23rd that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 22nd (local time) with GE Vernova, Hitachi and SGE to cooperate on market development and commercial opportunities for the BWRX-300 small modular reactor during the “Atlantic Council Nuclear Energy Policy Summit” held in New York. The summit is a side event of the United Nations General Assembly.

Under this agreement, the four companies plan to formulate a deployment strategy for the BWRX-300 in Europe and accelerate its commercialization. The initiative aims to establish a business model that enables the repeat supply of small modular reactors of the same design to multiple countries by combining nuclear technology, industrial capabilities, global engineering capabilities, procurement capabilities and construction capabilities, as well as regional business development expertise in Europe.

The design and technology of the BWRX-300 are provided by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GVH), a joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi. This 300-megawatt boiling water reactor is based on proven commercial reactor technology through simplified and standardized design.
