Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant Restores External Power Supply

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has resumed receiving external electricity via the 330 kV Ferrospravnaya-1 transmission line. Previously, since August 20, the plant had relied on backup diesel generators to maintain essential on-site power for a duration of 19 days.

Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, stated that the plant has switched from diesel generator power to external power supply and is currently operating normally. The Zaporizhzhia NPP reported that following the restoration of the Ferrospravnaya-1 line, the backup diesel generators have been placed on standby.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stated that restoring external power supply is a key step in helping prevent nuclear accidents. External electricity is used for reactor and spent fuel pool cooling and supports other critical nuclear safety and security functions.

The Zaporizhzhia NPP also emphasized that to further enhance power supply reliability as well as nuclear and radiation safety levels, it remains necessary to restore and bring into operation the second 750 kV Dniprovska transmission line, while ensuring a continuous supply of fuel for backup diesel generators. The IAEA stated that since the line was taken out of service on March 24, the Zaporizhzhia NPP has long relied on the Ferrospravnaya-1 line as its primary external power source.

The plant reported that following the restoration of external power supply, radiation conditions at the site and surrounding areas remain stable, with monitoring results at natural background levels. Plant experts continue to monitor key safety parameters.
