Toshiba Energy Systems Selected for Next-Generation Innovative Reactor Core Structure R&D and Demonstration Project
On September 9, 2026, Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba ESS) announced that it has been selected for the second round of public solicitation under the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's FY2025 supplementary budget "Support Program for Technology Development and Supply Chain Construction for Next-Generation Innovative Reactor Development and Construction," undertaking the "Next-Generation Innovative Reactor Core Structure R&D and Manufacturing Demonstration Project (Phase 2)."

Following this selection, Toshiba Energy Systems will further expand its R&D efforts in reactor internal structures, building on the six projects previously selected in the first round. The company plans to collaborate with suppliers to conduct technology development and manufacturing demonstration for the core structure of its innovative light water reactor "iBR," which it is currently developing and advancing toward practical application.
Toshiba Energy Systems stated that the iBR is positioned as an innovative light water reactor featuring high safety and the ability to coexist harmoniously with local communities. Through this demonstration project, the company will work to establish the manufacturing, supply, and maintenance capabilities required for future core structure production, build the corresponding manufacturing infrastructure, and maintain and strengthen the supply chain system.
According to available information, Toshiba Energy Systems was previously selected for this support program in August 2025, and six related projects were selected in August 2026. Together with the core structure R&D and manufacturing demonstration project selected this time, the company is continuously advancing technology development for next-generation innovative reactors and strengthening industrial infrastructure.
Toshiba Energy Systems stated that it will continue to advance the technological development and application preparation of the innovative light water reactor iBR, while maintaining and strengthening the nuclear-related industrial base and human resources base, thereby supporting stable power supply and the achievement of carbon neutrality goals.
