AtkinsRéalis Joint Venture Wins $1.7 Billion Nuclear Power Plant Refurbishment Contract
The joint venture formed by Candu Energy, a subsidiary of AtkinsRéalis, and Aecon Group has signed a three-year, $1.7 billion contract with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to officially launch the refurbishment of Unit 5 at the Pickering CANDU nuclear power plant. The scope of work includes retubing, feeder replacement, and steam generator replacement (RFBR).

It is understood that the project is part of Ontario's larger nuclear expansion and life extension program. The program also includes refurbishment work at the Bruce and Darlington nuclear power plants, as well as plans for new nuclear generating capacity.
Joe St. Julian, President of Nuclear at AtkinsRéalis, said: “As Canada's only homegrown large nuclear technology, CANDU further strengthens the nation's energy security and independence. A significant advantage of CANDU technology is its ability to operate on natural, unenriched uranium, reducing reliance on foreign uranium enrichment services and effectively reinforcing energy security during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.”
