Canada and UK Nuclear Institutes Sign Reciprocal Membership Agreement to Strengthen Nuclear Professional Cooperation

On September 8, 2026, the Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) and the UK's Nuclear Institute (NI) announced the signing of a cooperation agreement at the Canada—UK Nuclear Day, establishing a reciprocal membership mechanism and promoting closer collaboration between the two professional organizations.

Under the agreement, members of either organization can join the other free of charge and enjoy corresponding membership benefits, including registering for conferences and events hosted by the other organization at member discount rates. The arrangement aims to facilitate skills exchange, knowledge sharing, and professional networking between nuclear professionals in Canada and the UK, while supporting the career development of members in both countries.

CNS President Daniel Gammage stated that the Canadian Nuclear Society is honored to collaborate with the Nuclear Institute through the reciprocal membership agreement. This initiative will strengthen the ties between the nuclear professional communities of the two countries, creating opportunities for Canadian and UK members to share knowledge, build relationships, and advance their careers. He noted that international cooperation is increasingly important as nuclear energy plays a growing role in clean energy, innovation, and energy security, and that this agreement represents a step toward supporting a shared future.

Both organizations stated that they share common goals in supporting the safe and effective use of nuclear science and technology, and will further enhance professional capacity building in the nuclear field through professional collaboration, knowledge exchange, and international cooperation.

NI Chief Executive Officer Robert Gowton stated that Canada's nuclear industry is in a phase of rapid growth, similar to the development of the UK's nuclear industry, and that both organizations have the opportunity to enhance their service capabilities through collaboration and knowledge sharing. For members, the agreement will bring additional membership benefits and opportunities to establish long-term professional relationships, while helping to uphold the high professional standards of the international nuclear community.

The Nuclear Institute is a professional membership organization focused on the nuclear field, dedicated to advancing nuclear knowledge, education, and career development, representing approximately 5,500 professionals across all levels of the nuclear industry. By connecting experts, institutions, and the next generation of innovators, the Institute supports the sustainable and safe development of nuclear technology and maintains professional standards in the industry through continuing learning, professional networking, and professional registration.

The Canadian Nuclear Society was established in 1979, originally as the technical society of the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA). In 1998, the CNS was registered as an independent federal non-profit organization. Following the separation of administrative functions between the CNA and CNS, and the CNA's relocation to Ottawa in March 2000, the CNS completed its process of independent operation and became a member society of the Engineering Institute of Canada.
