The scale of nuclear power units in operation and under construction in Chinese mainland continues to expand
Recently, the latest statistics show that the construction and operation scale of nuclear power units in Chinese mainland continues to maintain a globally leading momentum. As of October 31, 2026, Chinese mainland had 63 nuclear power units in operation, 37 units under construction, and another 20 units approved and awaiting construction.
It is reported that this massive nuclear power engineering system fully covers third-generation pressurized water reactors with completely independent intellectual property rights as well as cutting-edge advanced reactor demonstration projects. With the batch construction and efficient and safe operation of advanced units such as Hualong One and Guohe One, China's nuclear power industry is playing an increasingly central supporting role in safeguarding national energy security, optimizing the power structure, and helping achieve the "dual carbon" goals.
In terms of safety supervision and engineering quality management, the National Nuclear Safety Administration and major nuclear power groups continue to strengthen rigorous oversight throughout the entire process, ensuring that operating units maintain world-class safety performance and that projects under construction and approved for future construction are steadily advanced in strict compliance with the highest international safety standards.
At present, China's nuclear power is accelerating its evolution toward "multi-unit construction and multi-unit operation" and diversified comprehensive utilization of nuclear energy. With the steady implementation of large-scale installed capacity, China is accelerating the building of a new energy system supported importantly by advanced nuclear energy, continuously contributing Chinese solutions and practical experience to the global clean and low-carbon transition.
