A member of Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority inspects safety management at the Takahama Nuclear Power Plant.

Tomoyuki Sugiyama, a commissioner of Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), recently visited Kansai Electric Power Co.'s Takahama Nuclear Power Plant to inspect safety management measures, the execution of routine inspections, and preparations for the replacement of relevant equipment.

Located in Fukui Prefecture, the Takahama Nuclear Power Plant was the site of this inspection, during which Sugiyama reviewed Kansai Electric's arrangements for spent fuel management. The company is seeking consent from Fukui Prefecture to temporarily store spent fuel within the plant's facilities before eventually transporting it out of the prefecture.

Unit 3 of the Takahama plant is currently undergoing routine inspections, with plans to replace critical components such as steam generators. Steam generators—which utilize heat generated by the reactor to produce steam that drives turbines for electricity generation—are vital equipment in pressurized water reactor (PWR) units. Sugiyama inspected the preparations for this equipment replacement on-site.

Sugiyama also observed the work of NRA inspectors stationed at the plant, focusing on how regulatory staff verify the implementation of the utility company's daily inspections and routine safety management measures.

Following the inspection, Sugiyama stated that the on-site visit provided him with a more concrete understanding of the plant's actual conditions, which aids in responding to potential emergencies. He also expressed hope that the relevant parties would continue to prioritize the interests of local residents and thoroughly implement safety assurance measures.
