Amentum Awarded $85 Million Contract to Provide Design Engineering Support for U.S. Navy Nuclear Infrastructure

On July 23, Amentum announced it had secured a three-year, $85 million contract to provide design and modernization support for infrastructure associated with the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program.

Under the contract, Amentum will assist in upgrading the Navy’s spent fuel inspection capabilities at the Naval Reactors Facility in Idaho. These inspections analyze the actual operational performance of spent fuel cores and compare the data against predictions made during the design and testing phases, thereby supporting the safe and efficient operation of the Navy’s nuclear-powered fleet.

Mark Whitney, President of Amentum’s Energy and Environment business, stated that the project would enhance the U.S. Navy’s ability to evaluate, optimize, and extend the service life of nuclear fuel cores. The company noted that its nuclear engineering capabilities span the entire lifecycle of nuclear programs, enabling it to provide design, engineering, and operational support to clients in the nuclear sector.

The U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program is jointly executed by the Department of Energy and the Department of the Navy, overseeing the design, development, and operational support of nuclear propulsion systems. The U.S. Navy currently operates a nuclear-powered fleet that includes 11 active aircraft carriers and more than 70 submarines. Headquartered in Chantilly, Virginia, Amentum employs approximately 50,000 people across more than 70 countries.
